Friday, 4th November, marks the 15th year of the popular BBC Radio 6 Music's T-Shirt Day. The alternative radio station airs a special show on the first Friday in November from Maida Vale studios, London, with DJ Steve Lamacq asking listeners to unearth their most treasured band tee shirts and wear them for a day. Listeners then send photos of themselves wearing their shirts via social media, including the hashtags #TShirtDay #Requestsfromyourchests

Nostalgia

Music lovers remember their first gig. It is a rite of passage; mine was Tina Turner's wildest dreams tour (don't judge). It wasn't my choice (I went with my parents). I didn't buy a t shirt from that gig, but hundreds of adoring fans did.

Buying a t shirt is more than simply a souvenir from a gig, it’s a gateway back to the past, and when you put it on, it instantly transports you back to that memorable evening.

"T-Shirt Day has become a special moment in the 6 Music year. Whatever the shirt, they all tell a story or say something about the people we are. And it's lovely to spend a day sharing those tales and reliving the memories they conjure up." — Steve Lamacq.

What makes a great band T-Shirt?

We all have our favourites, but a good band t shirt is stylish, iconic and eye-catching. Some band designs have become so well known that they've integrated into modern-day popular culture. For example, The Who's Blue, White and Red target, Pink Floyds Triangle prism of rainbow light or the Black and Red lightning bolt between AC/DC.

“Whatever the shirt, they all tell a story or say something about the people we are. And it's lovely to spend a day sharing those tales and reliving the memories they conjure up. Once again, we'll be throwing out the playlist for the day and playing nothing but music by the artists who appear on listeners' shirts. And as it's T-Shirt Day's 15th Anniversary, we're going to finish the day with a special show at the BBC Maida Vale studios with live music and guests and a look at some of our favourite iconic music T-shirt designs." — Steve Lamacq.
